Battery Backup & Solar Storage
HOME BATTERY BACKUP & SOLAR ENERGY STORAGEReliable Power
When the Grid Goes Down
A home battery backup system can keep essential equipment running during a power outage, from refrigerators and lights to internet equipment, well pumps, and heating systems. When paired with solar, battery storage can also recharge from the sun and give you greater control over how your energy is used.
South Sound Solar designs battery backup systems for homes and businesses throughout Olympia and Western Washington. The right system depends on the battery capacity, the equipment you want to power, and how much stored energy you reserve for an outage.
USE THE CALCULATOR BELOW to explore how battery size, backup reserve settings, and household loads can affect your estimated backup runtime.
How Long Could a Home Battery Keep You Powered?
Explore how battery capacity, reserve settings, and household loads can affect estimated backup runtime. This tool provides general examples to help you understand battery sizing. Your actual results will depend on your equipment, energy use, system design, weather, and other conditions.
Backup Reserve % — “reserved energy for outage”
Your battery is your backup generator
Your battery runs your whole house in an outage, like a standby generator — but it only refills from the sun. So the reserve you set is the fuel you start with, and in a winter storm it may be all you get.
not in the tank
Reading the tank at its low point. The hours shown are the daily low — after sunset, before the next solar recharge — because that's when an outage is most likely to catch the battery near its floor; an outage at midday finds it fuller. Runtime is derated for the battery's round-trip conversion losses, so it reflects usable delivered energy rather than nameplate capacity. Backed-up-loads wattages are estimates of average continuous draw; because appliances cycle on and off, real draw varies — pick Custom to enter your own. These figures are estimates for general guidance, not a guarantee of backup performance; actual results depend on your equipment, loads, and weather. Questions about your specific system? Custom Proposals
Our solar sales specialists create a custom proposal based on your unique needs. We use professional shade analysis tools to find the ideal location for the array and if shading is an issue, we will discuss a ground mounted solar array. We will go over your budget, energy usage, and possible financing options. No 2 customers or solar arrays are the same and we want to make sure yours is right for you!
